When the “This I Believe” assignment was introduced to my LA101H class, I genuinely looked forward to writing the essay. In high school, I worked diligently writing a “This I Believe” about the terrible loss of a close family friend. When I completed that essay, I presented it in front of my peers and felt a strong sense of accomplishment. Three years later, I reread the essay and could not believe the revisions I was itching to make. What I saw as perfect three years ago transformed into a piece in need of major revision.

As I wrote my newly assigned “This I Believe,” I once again felt a strong sense of accomplishment. The essay was personal and heartfelt. However, when my professor returned the essay with her comments, I was disappointed. I began a long process of revision in order to improve the piece, and along the way, I realized that my essay was indeed personal and heartfelt, but not relatable. I strived to revise the essay and make my belief statement tangible for every reader and not just for me. I hope that this final product reflects a successful revision.
